A Prayer For the Beginning Of a School Year

Our Father in Heaven,

As we look at these children, the many children in our midst,
the little ones, and the ones that are not so little any more, we praise you.
We praise you for sustaining, providing for, and nurturing them.
For by you, Lord, all things were created and by you all things hold together.

We thank you for your protection over them this summer
as they swam in swimming pools, played sports,
climbed playgrounds, went on vacations with their families,
and as they got bumps and bruises and as some of them spent time in hospitals,
you watched over them, and for that we give you thanks.

Father, and now, as the summer is coming to a close and fall is upon us,
We ask that you bless them as they turn their attention to school.
We ask, may you help them do all their work with all their heart, as for the Lord Jesus.
Help them know and remember that, all the hard work that they are about to put in,
studying math, grammar, reading, history, and all of the other subjects;
is preparing them to be fit instruments in the hands of their Lord Jesus,
ready for every good work that he has prepared for them.

Father we ask for parents, as they continue to bear their responsibility of training
their children up in discipline and instruction of the Lord.
We ask that they not lose sight of the fact that it is their primary responsibility,
not the schools, not the teachers, but theirs for which they will  have to give an account.

So Father, we ask for your help for them
as they get used to new rhythms and routines in the household,
as the pressure of homework and school projects begin,
we ask that you would fan in them a burning desire to instruct and teach their children.
Bless them as they bring their children to the Word so that they may grow
in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature,
attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

Father, we pray for the parents as they interact with their children,
may the fruit of the Spirit be ever present in their lives.
May all their interaction be full of  love, joy, peace and patience,
kindness and goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
We pray for these children, may they obey their parents, for this is right.

Father we ask for these things that you may keep us from sin
and help us walk in a way that is pleasing to you,
but we also know that when we do sin you have promised,
“if we confess our sins, You are faithful and just to forgive us
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

With this gospel hope and in the name of Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
